Inpatient Surgery
Welcome to Major Hospital’s Orthopaedic Care Unit
Pre-operation Care and Planning Patients will expect our staff to do a complete medical history - including review of family, allergies review, current medication review, as well as a physical examination. Based on the patients type of surgery and comorbidities, the team will determine if the patient requires pre-admission testing for anesthesia clearance. Additional pre-operation steps are taken for elective total joint replacement patients, such as sending them to a physical therapist for a one visit Functional Outcomes Measurement. This will help both the surgeon and the patient decipher how much they have progressed from the surgery. Patients are also sent to Major Hospital to attend it’s ‘Total Joint Replacement Class’. There they’ll learn pre-operative instructions and post operative treatments, as well as tour the facility, and a brief review of the entire hospital experience. Joint replacement patients can also take advantage of Major Hospital’s free home safety evaluation service. Part of the pre-operative plans may involve the determination of any adaptive equipment such as a walker, elevated toilet seat, or any other physical building adjustments, like the building of ramps. Making these adjustments prior to surgery will greatly assist in patient ease of recovery when going home.
